Toyota Research Institute (TRI)

Toyota Research Institute (TRI) is a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, established in 2016 with a $1 billion investment over five years. Its mission is to create new tools and capabilities focused on improving the human condition, with a vision for Toyota products, enabled by TRI technology, to dramatically improve quality of life for individuals and society. TRI conducts research to amplify human ability, focusing on making lives safer and more sustainable. The institute's research areas include artificial intelligence (AI), vehicular automation, materials science, and robotics. TRI has offices in Los Altos, California (headquarters) and Cambridge, Massachusetts. TRI also launched Toyota AI Ventures, a corporate venture capital subsidiary, to provide early-stage financing to startup technology companies.
