About
Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF) is a non-profit organization founded in 1901 to acquire land and encourage Jewish settlement in Ottoman Syria (later Mandatory Palestine, subsequently Israel and the Palestinian territories). By 2007, it owned 13% of the total land in Israel. Since its inception, KKL-JNF has planted over 240 million trees, built 180 dams and reservoirs, developed 250,000 acres (1,000 km²) of land, and established more than 1,000 parks. KKL-JNF's activities include forestry, combating desertification, community development, water management, fighting the climate crisis, and Zionist and environmental education. The organization also develops recreation sites, agricultural infrastructure, and tourism facilities. KKL-JNF works to make its forests and parks accessible for people with disabilities. In 1953, the JNF was dissolved and re-organized as an Israeli company under the name Keren Kayemeth LeYisrael (JNF-KKL). In 1960, the administration of land held by KKL-JNF, excluding forested areas, was transferred to the Israel Land Administration (ILA). KKL-JNF continues to operate as an independent agency of the World Zionist Organization, raising funds for land redemption and conducting informational and Zionist-Israel educational activities.
