About

Zzapp Malaria aims to eradicate malaria - a disease affecting the health and livelihood of hundreds of millions of people. To that end, it developed an AI-based platform that significantly increases effectiveness of large-scale anti-malaria operations while drastically cutting their costs.

Zzapp's platform consists of (1) a command center that automatically plans operations based on integration of satellite imagery, topography, weather data and other relevant information; and (2) a mobile app that helps track execution and collects ground-level data. In two large controlled trials, in Ghana and São Tomé, the platform has been demonstrated to significantly improve cost-effectiveness in both urban and rural settings, as it reduced mosquito population and malaria cases for a cost competitive with existing methods.

Zzapp is the grand-prize winner ($3M) of the IBM Watson XPRIZE AI for Good competition and the Cisco Global Problem Solver Challenge 2021. In addition, the company is collaborating with the Gates Foundation and institutes in six African countries.

Zzapp Malaria is a spinoff of Sight Diagnostics, which has developed machine vision technology for blood diagnostics.
