CardioGard is developing a system designed specifically for the removal of gaseous and solid embolic material during heart bypass surgeries. The system is composed of a double-lumen cannula, in which the primary lumen provides oxygenated blood from the heart-lung machine to the patient and a secondary lumen suctions blood and embolic matter away from the surgical field and back to the cardiopulmonary bypass machine for filtration. The design of the cannula is based on the unique blood flow patterns during surgical procedures. The flow rates through the lumens of the cannula are carefully controlled so that the majority of emboli areremoved by the cannula while providing a physiologically acceptable net flow of blood into the aorta.
