Harel was founded in 1935 by Ernst and Margot Hamburger as an insurance agency, and in 1982, Harel Insurance and Finances (then known as Harel Hamishmar Investments Ltd.) was established and had an initial public offering on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. The company has expanded through mergers and acquisitions and is a public company whose shares are traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE: HARL) and is included in the TA-35 index. Harel also has international ties and serves as a global partner for overseas insurance companies.
