TransAlgae develops an algae-based platform for the oral delivery of drugs (vaccines, immune modulators, insecticides, etc.) for human and animal health and for crop protection.
TransAlgae's drug-delivery platform was demonstrated on mice as a model for humans. TransAlgae successfully demonstrated that proteins, expressed in algae, were orally delivered to the mice blood and liver in their intact form, due to the native bio-encapsulation of the algae and the formulation that TransAlgae has developed.
In the area of animal health, TransAlgae's oral-delivery technology replaces the need for antibiotics and vaccination by injections. The company's algal powder, containing the desired drug or vaccine, is used as a feed supplement, enabling vaccination by feeding.
TransAlgae has also developed a proprietary platform for the delivery of biological-based insecticides to be sprayed on crops. The technology enables targeting particular insects in a specific manner, replacing the need for toxic chemicals.
The genetically modified algae are inactive, thus not affecting humans, animals, or crops, and are classified as a GMO-derived material.
