Semantic Medical Simulations (SMS) joined forces with MEDSTAR-SiTEL to develop a medical simulation platform. The simulations are operated by free-language commands, and involve the trainee managing a virtual team of medical professionals coping with medical events. SMS interprets what the trainee says and then translates it into the simulators command language.
The first simulation to be developed depicts an emergency room scenario with a patient, nurses, and many other medical staff. The trainee is expected to ask medical questions in normal, natural language, such as, What is the patients blood pressure? as well as to say aloud the appropriate medical instructions and commands, such as I need another nurse here! or Marcus, please perform GCS right now.
The company might suggest also clarifying questions if trainee's intention is not entirely clear. SiTEL on their side take care of running the actual simulation: the graphical display, the actual response to trainees questions and commands, asking the trainee the questions suggested, and so on.
