NXP has had presence in Israel since the purchase of Freescale in 2015. NXP Semiconductors Israel was then formed by the Freescale Israel R&D center. Later in 2015, NXP acquired Athena Smartcard, a smart card and chip manufacturer, and integrated it into the NXP corporation. With the closing of Freescale's research division in 2016, NXP research activities now focus mainly on the developments of Athena: smart cards and chip design manufacturing, mainly for printers and payment applications.
