Galil Medical develops cryotherapy solutions that address patient conditions across multiple physician specialties. Its treatment areas include conditions affecting the kidneys, liver, lungs, prostate, and bones, as well as targeted pain and nerve applications.
The companys technology is designed to ablate diseased tissue through freezing using a technique known as cryotherapy. The core technology is based on the Joule-Thomson effect, in which compressed gas causes significant, rapid temperature changes.
Galil Medical cryotherapy systems use compressed argon gas to produce extremely low temperatures. As the gas passes through the cryoablation needle, the tip of the needle is cooled, forming an ice ball that engulfs the tumor and destroys the tissue. A variety of needle types are available to sculpt a freeze zone for the tumors specific size and shape.
Galil Medical was bought by BTG plc in May 2016.
