Bayit Legan has developed the Macrophytic Artificial Mini-wetland (MAM) system, in which household greywater is purified by macrophytic means.
With the MAM system, greywater is discharged after use from kitchen and bathroom sinks, showers, baths, dishwashers, and washing machines, and then flows from the home to an artificially created mini-wetland, passing through various layers of aggregates (e.g. sand, pebbles, etc.) along the way.
The macrophytes are planted and grow in this small wetland, where their root zone provides an ideal medium for a plethora of micro-organisms. The microbial activity, coupled with other complex physical, chemical, and biological processes, results in the breakdown of the pollutants found in the greywater into plant nutrients. These nutrients can then be taken up by the plants, leaving the water highly purified.
Laboratory tests performed to measure the water quality before and after purification and recycling in Bayit Legans MAM system have shown a particularly high level of purification.
